Day 19 — September 9
Today’s idea I got from Worshiping With Children click HERE to read about it.
Story: Isaiah 58 — We are reading the whole chapter the idea at the above link covers 1-12
and this is what she says about these verses.
Though this is a complicated passage, when it is explained to children, they respond. Isaiah is saying we don’t need to be sad about the bad things we do. Instead, we need to stop doing those things. We need to change our ways, to repent. Verses 6 and 7 are key. When they are explored and linked to specific Lenten disciplines offered to the congregation, children take up those disciplines enthusiastically.
Activity: Talk about fasting and that usually it means giving up food for a period of time but it can also mean going without something that is a bad habit. Here are some ideas that I got from Worshiping With Children (she gathered these from HERE if you check it out you will find a larger list there).
Fast from greed, feast on sharingFast from telling lies, feast on telling the truthFast from hating, feast on lovingFast from teasing, feast on kind words
Talk about fasting from something for a period of time. It could be for the day, for a week, for a month, for the rest of our Refresh time. Be sure to write it down like it is above fast from _______, feast on _________. Have your child decorate the paper you have written on and hang it in a place the family will see daily — the fridge, bathroom mirror, etc.
Prayer: Have your child(ren) repeat after you. Dear God. That you for everything you have given us. We have so much more then many other people around the world. Be with us this during this time as we fast from ____ and feat on ____. Amen.
